CD Projekt Red Teases Plans for The Witcher 4

-

The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt came out nearly a decade ago, and now CD Projekt is eagerly working on the next chapter, The Witcher 4, which has entered full production.

During a chat with Eurogamer, CD Projekt’s top people, like CEO Michał Nowakowski and tech VP Charles Tremblay, shared that The Witcher 4 is set to be even more epic than both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077. Tremblay said, “I think that we have some cool stuff going, and hopefully that will have some good showcase [of the technology]. The only thing I will say is that changing the tech for us does not change the fact that we always will be ambitious. And the next game we do will not be smaller, and it will not be worse. So it will be better, bigger, greater than The Witcher 3, it will be better than Cyberpunk–because for us, it’s unacceptable [to launch that way]. We don’t want to go back.”

One thing CD Projekt wants to change is how they promote their games. After learning from Cyberpunk 2077’s marketing mishaps, they now plan to start promoting The Witcher 4 only when the game is truly ready. Nowakowski mentioned they’ll still drop teasers and “crumbs” to get fans talking, but the massive trailers and big reveals will wait until they have a definite launch date in mind.

“I want to stress: it doesn’t mean we would not tease or drop some cool assets before [a full reveal],” Nowakowski explained. “Because the marketing campaign, slightly earlier before the launch of the game, that’s different than the actual, say, ‘mass attack’. Mass attack is when you announce the date, you start collecting the pre-orders and it really is that race from that point, that moment, to the moment you launch the game.”

Fans might not know the story yet, but CD Projekt says work on The Witcher 5 and 6 should be smoother since the groundwork will be laid. They also expect each game to take about three years to make, so this new Witcher saga will likely stretch into the 2030s.
