Borderlands 4 is coming to Steam and the Epic Games Store on PC.
This is noteworthy because Borderlands 3 was an Epic Games Store exclusive for a while. Also, Randy Pitchford from Gearbox had some harsh words about Steam years ago. Back in 2019, he thought Steam might be “a dying store” within a decade.
A viral post on X called out Pitchford for his old prediction, now that Borderlands 4 will be on Steam.
saying that might’ve been true “if Epic successfully pressed its advantage.”
If Epic successfully pressed its advantage, that may have been the case. But Epic did not. So, famously, Steam does very little to earn the massive cut they take and continues its effective monopoly in the West while would-be competitors with much more developer friendly models…

He didn’t stop there. He explained why Borderlands 4 is coming to Steam (it’s also hitting PS5 and Xbox Series X|S). He said, “…Steam does very little to earn the massive cut they take and continues its effective monopoly in the West while would-be competitors with much more developer friendly models continue to shoot themselves in the foot.” Pitchford added that he’s a Steam customer and developer who supports competition.
Fans are really excited about the game.
Pitchford also mentioned his love for his Steam Deck: “As a Steam Deck customer and user, my bias for personal interest and convenience is fighting against my wish for a more developer-friendly alternative on Windows PC.”

When Borderlands 3 came out in 2019, it was first available only on the Epic Games Store before it launched on Steam about six months later. At first, it seemed like a big win for Epic.
But this month, Epic Games’ Tim Sweeney admitted that many of their exclusivity deals weren’t great investments. He didn’t give details but said their free-games program had better returns.
Earlier this week at Gamescom Opening Night Live, Borderlands 4 was revealed. The game will launch in 2025 with a new villain even more dangerous than Handsome Jack.
